Trackers come in different varieties:

1) passive – Passive GPS tracker is a tracker that obtains data from GPS satellites or cell phone towers, has storage and tracks in set intervals and stores the data to be read later after retrieval. Generally these gather GPS data in set increments and store data in portable storage such as an SD card.

2) active (real time)  – Active real time tracker is a tracker that obtains data from GPS satellites, has cell transmitting ability, transmits data thorough cell phone towers to internet into a server where user has ability to use smartphone app, laptop, desktop computer to view data and track in real time. These is some lag time but its just a few seconds.
